3 Things you Need to Know for your First Ballroom Dancing Lesson
You've decided to try something new.
It's scary, it's foreign, and it's with a whole new demographic of people that you don't know exactly how to interact with.
You've signed up for Ballroom Dancing lessons.
Maybe you want a new way to meet people, maybe you want to learn a new skill, or maybe you just want to get a little more movement into your life. Whatever the reason, taking the leap into a new hobby can be scary. But don't you worry, we have some tips to help you get on your feet and boogieing in no time.
Get Comfortable
A common question we get is "What should I wear to my first lesson?" The answer is always this: whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident! Keep in mind, however, that ballroom dancing is very active - and is in close quarters with another person. So it is best practice to wear close-toed shoes that don't have a hard time staying on your feet (i.e. no flip-flops or sandals) and are easy to move in (i.e. maybe opt for a lower heel, ladies!).
Stay Open
We know a lot of newcomers can feel intimidated and overwhelmed looking at our instructors. Things like "I'll never be as good as them" or, "They won't be able to teach me" run through the thoughts and sometimes out of the mouths of newer students. But we want to let you in on a little secret: Every one of our teachers started out just like you.
Every single dancer you see started out exactly where you are! So don't let their skills (developed after a lot of years of very hard work) intimidate you - stay open to learning and development alongside them.
Have Fun
This is the most important piece of advice we can give you. People take ballroom dance lessons for all sorts of different reasons; everyone is going to have a different goal in mind. The best thing you can do on your way to that goal is to have fun.
