Discover a New Culture Through Dance!
The rich culture of Latin dancing dates back to the 15th-century. It is a complex set of movements and rhythms that stem from a blend of influences from various countries. This blend of cultural influences has created the bold and beautiful style of dance we know of today as Latin dancing. Explore the movements of a different culture with Quick Quick Slow Ballroom.
Origin
Early 16th-century European explorers, upon traversing through Portugal and Spain, told stories of the beautifully methodical dances of the native people. When Europeans made their way to South America, they began to assimilate into the culture. They learned the traditions of early Latin American dance, blending with their own to make a new style of dancing. Early Latin dance told stories relatable to ancient societies, stories relating to things like hunting or astronomy.
European, Latin American, and African Influences
Many early European dances were group folk dances, but upon settling in South America, some were performed as a couples dance. These dances, combined with the music and dance culture of the native people, formed this style of Latin American dancing. Later, as Latin dancing moved more and more away from storytelling and became more focused on rhythm and steps, African culture began to find its influence in enriching Latin dance.
There is no richer way to experience the culture of a different country than through dance. Latin dancing has an incredible history of influences. Other dance styles also stem from various cultures and have histories that were meant to be experienced.
