Making the Most of Your Dance Lessons
Making the Most of Your Dance Lessons
If you've just enrolled in ballroom dance classes, congratulations! You're about to embark on an exciting journey that can bring a lifetime of enjoyment. As you begin to learn, here's some easy tips to help you make the most of your lessons.
Take Notes- Find a notepad or use a notepad app to capture the highlights from your lesson. Do this while the lesson is still fresh in your mind. Record the dances and steps that you worked on and any other notes that will help you retain your new knowledge.
Listen to Music- Stream ballroom music or find some CDs to listen to. This will help you become more familiar with the rhythms that you'll be dancing to. Listen in your car, at work, or when you're winding down for the day.
Practice- It can't be said enough, practicing your new skills is important. When you practice between lessons, you'll improve and progress faster. Even with just 5 or 10 minutes of daily practice, you'll see growth and you'll make your instructor very happy.
Watch Dance Videos- There's a wealth of ballroom dance videos online. Ask your instructor which professional dancers to watch. Watching the pros will not only assist with your learning, they're sure to inspire as well
Care for Your Shoes- If you've purchased a pair of ballroom shoes with suede soles, be sure to brush the bottoms after each lesson. Doing so will remove any dirt or floor wax that collected, and will help preserve the shoes.
Have Fun- When you first start learning how to dance, it may feel awkward. You may be putting your body into positions that don't feel natural. You might use muscles that you normally don't use. These feelings are normal for beginners and shouldn't dissuade. Talk to your instructor and with their guidance, you'll be dancing with ease and having fun in no time.
