The Six Easiest, Must-Have Ballroom and Latin Dances to Learn

Learning how to dance is not a difficult task. Not only can you learn dances for any occasion, but ballroom and latin dancing lessons are also a great way to make new friends and get in shape. And let’s not forget that dancing is fun!

Whereas there are several types of dances, there are six must-haves that are not only relatively easy to learn but are also perfect for any occasion—weddings, work parties, dates, etc.

1. Waltz

The waltz is, by far, the most graceful and well-known of the smooth ballroom dances. Its distinctive ¾ timing, rise and fall, and flowing style make this dance different from most others. Knowing how to waltz is impressive, indeed.

2. Foxtrot

The Foxtrot epitomizes old Hollywood, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and is perfect for virtually any of the classic standards. Its smooth and easy slow-slow-quick-quick tempo and distinctive style are easy to learn and this dance looks fantastic when done correctly.

3. Swing

An upbeat dance with several speed options, the swing is distinguished by the variety of spins, kicks, and other tricks that are quite fun and tend to attract an audience. Talk about a great workout too!

4. Rumba

This Latin staple is the king of romantic and sensual slow dances. With a quick-quick-slow timing and exaggerated hip movements, the Rumba is a definite must-have in any dancer’s repertoire.

5. Cha Cha

Performed to a 4/4 beat with a syncopated final beat, the Cha Cha has a distinctive “2, 3, 4-and-1” rhythm. The quick “cha-cha-cha” step gives this dance its characteristic look.
