In recent weeks, COVID-19 has raged throughout the world. It's an elusive, terrible enemy, and the images of the devastation are heartbreaking. It's been compared to WWII. Yet other images come to mind too. From their balconies, musicians are serenading their friends and loved ones with instruments and song. They display unity, courage, and hope, comforting each other in the middle of chaos.
During WWII, servicemen on leave danced as well. Do you remember the images of these men swing dancing with beautiful women, flipping them into the air, and swinging across the dance floor to lively music? Together, they gave each other respite from the fear and pain of the realities of war. For those of us who can, how can we insert more joy into our lives? What about dancing during hard times?
KEEP DANCING
We must keep dancing! Dancing is a way to find joy in the midst of hardship and suffering. It's a way to bring joy to others. So listen to upbeat music and dance. If you're under a stay-at-home order, dance in your living room, alone or with loved ones.
Or like some of the solo dancers in Pharrell Williams's delightful video "Happy," dance in the streets on the way to buy essentials (at least six feet away from onlookers). Even though you can't take on a new partner right now, keep dancing!
