"I don't like this song."
"I have to take this call."
"I tweaked my back moving something."
Although there are multiple studies showing the benefits of taking up dancing, the excuses not to dance are infinite. What's holding you back?
Take a look at some of these common objections and why you should just two-step around them.
I'm too old to learn to dance
The classic saying goes "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." A 2014 study from Brown University, however, tells a different story. It suggests that older adults do in fact have the brain elasticity needed for learning. It just occurs in a different part of the brain from when they were younger.
On top of that, activities that engage both mind and body (ahem...dancing) have been shown to increase brain function in older adults. The physical and social aspects of dancing seem to improve or maintain white matter health, which is critical to a well-functioning noggin.
Not only are you not too old to learn to dance. It can actually help sharpen your mind!
I don't have the right body type for dancing
Do you think your height or weight might be a problem on the dance floor? There's good news:
It truly doesn't matter.
Dancers come in all shapes and sizes, and there's no "correct-proportion" between dance partners.
Dancing is a celebration of the body. And besides, it's not the type of car you're in that matters. It's how you drive it.
If I dance with someone, they'll get the wrong idea
Don't be traumatized by memories from middle school. While dancing definitely can be romantic, it doesn't have to be.
In cultures around the world, dance is just another way to interact with one another. Dancing with family, friends, and people from all social circles is completely normal. And enjoyable!
This is especially true for Ballroom and Latin dance. Dancing with different partners provides the opportunity to experience different styles and approaches. You might even pick up a move or two!
There's no pressure either way. Whether you decide to stick with one dance partner or mix it up, what matters is having fun.
But I don't know how to dance!
